Music to MMOve You

WOWGuitarBack in my days of competitive league play for the original QuakeWorld TeamFortress, I used to do all my gibbing to the soundtrack of the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Other players would talk about how they played to various electronic or heavy metal music, but I unabashedly informed them that when I was killing them and stealing their flag, I was singing at the top of my lungs “I don’t care how I WANT IT NOW!!” For one, it was true. But it also added an extra layer of shame to their defeat to know that they were beaten by a team where one of the members listened to borderline show tunes while kicking their asses.

Throughout the years, especially as the games changed, the music I listened to changed as well. Silly energetic pop songs gave way to things like the soundtrack for Conan the Barbarian escorting me through long night raids in EverQuest. But as I’ve gamed less, I’ve found myself actually listening to more music from games.

Massively has a list of 11 MMO Soundtracks that you can get for free. Anarchy Online, EVE, RuneScape, Star Wars: The Old Republic, PlaneShift, Glitch, Ryzom, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Atlantica Online, Global Agenda, and Ultima X Odyssey. Beyond the MMOs, there are a lot of good soundtracks out there for games. Lately, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to the soundtracks that get included with the Humble Bundle purchases, which are fairly close to free, though time limited in being able to obtain them. And if you are willing to shell out money, well, Syp over at Bio Break has a larger list of MMO soundtracks.

But I want to hear from you… What do you listen to while you play your favorite MMO? And which MMOs have the best music in them?
