Wizardry Online not quite online yet

At least for people not in Japan.

If you hadn’t heard, there in an MMO in Japan based on the classic game series Wizardry called, obviously, Wizardry Online. Our friends over at SOE have been working on bringing it to the US and EU’s rapid Wizardry fanbase. However, due to a few technical issues they’ve had to shove the release date from “tomorrow” to January 30th.

Now… why should you care?

Well, for starters, Wizardry is awesome – it’s the parent/inspiration for The Bard’s Tale and Might & Magic. But in addition to that you can go browse the official wiki for the game to see all sorts of info about the game. In particular I will direct your attention to the following bit on Permadeath.

Yes, they included permanent character death. That article boldly ends with the statement “you’ll have to delete that character to free up the character slot.” They also claim that there will be ways to avoid the dreaded final death, but it can still happen.

In addition to that, the game will have robust open world PVP. It’s a hardcore game for sure. But it’s also Free to Play, which means that if you do happen to get yourself more than mostly dead, at least it may not have cost you any money – just time.
