The Next Big Thing?

Every year, every two-bit MMO news website puts out a list of “Games we can’t wait to see this year.”

Well, this particular game isn’t coming out until late in 2014, but I thought I’d go ahead and boost the signal for this game just a little.

Chris Roberts, for those of you too young to remember, is the guy that created Wing Commander, Privateer, and Freelancer.  If you’ve never played any of those games, you have missed an important part of gaming history.  Wing Commander is more or less a straight space-dogfighter game that had live action cinematics (Mark Hamill and Ginger Lynn… whodathunkit?).  Privateer and Freelancer were single player prototypes for later games like Earth & Beyond and EVE Online.

It looks like he’s at it again with Star Citizen.  He set an initial crowd-sourced funding goal of 2 million dollars but has managed to raise just over 7 million dollars so far.  RSI (Roberts Space Industries) is releasing the game directly and not going through a publisher which should reduce his production costs significantly.

The thing that excites me most about this project is that here we have a proven game designer who is building a game on his own terms without having to sell out to a big publishing house like EA or Activision.  Roberts is taking some risks and I’m eagerly looking to see if he can pull it off.  Those of you who are a little bitter about the lack of space combat in SWTOR might want to take a really close look at this one.

Long way to go, but RSI’s presentation at GDC went over very well.  Have a look.
